Q: Am I Allowed To Modify Google Code?

NO. You are not allowed to modify any Google code what so ever. You can wrap code around the code, but you can not modify the actual AdSense code. You risk getting banned and losing your account for ever.

If you need to modify any code, do it from the control panel. If you think of it like this, it may make more sense. Google has a program out there which deals with money being passed around to millions of people a day with their AdSense program. If their code gets modified, some smart users can alter the designed functions of that code to make them benefit. Google does not want that and will throw the ban hammer if they see it modified.

There are probably tools in place on their end to compare code to its original, so just play it safe and do not modify the code.
